THE PRACTICE
The Ashtanga Yoga method is a dynamic practice of yoga that combines vinyasa, tristhana and bandha. Consistent daily practice with a focus on these three elements will lead to purification of the body and nervous system, and balance of the mind.
The Primary Series is the foundation of our practice. It is also called Yoga Chikitsa, wherein we practice from a therapeutic perspective: to heal our physical, mental and emotional blocks. The Intermediate Series, referred to as Nadi Shodhana, continues this healing process through purifying the nervous system.
As we gradually progress in our Ashtanga practice, we develop skills to make profound personal discoveries, gaining a deeper understanding of our true selves.
VINYASA: A breathing and movement system, for each movement, there is one breath.
TRISTHANA: The three places of attention or action.
- asana (posture)
- breath or rechaka (inhale) & puraka (exhale)
- dristhi (the looking place)
BANDHA: A lock; a component of the breathing system that provides a foundation of strength and energy, thus allowing the asana to give full benefit to the practitioner.
YOGA CHIKITSA: Yoga therapy; wherein we practice from a therapeutic perspective to heal our physical, mental and emotional blocks.
NADI SHODHANA: Purification of the energy channels or flow in the subtle body.
